River paced on one large, sturdy branch. She was tired but couldn't rest. She realized that Feather must hate her now, but that wasn't her priority at the time; it was escaping the dogs. She licked a bloody gash on the back of her leg, which was her only injury but some fur lost on her tail and sore, slightly bloody pads. She flattened her ears in frustration as she tried to think of a solution. She considered leaping from tree to tree, but River was no squirrel. Instead, she yowled; she yowled so loud the dogs jumped and looked around in confusion. She didn't know who she wanted to come. The twolegs, Feather, some other loners she knew, or maybe the few rogues around. She didn't know how anyone would help, either, but she wanted to at least feel like she had come up with some kinda solution.

One of Feather's ears twitched, hearing a faint yowling noise...It sounds like a cat...oh no... her head buzzed with thoughts yet again, raising her head she uncurled and stood, unsteady at first. River...? Oh no, please be alive... she thought, hesitantly making a small slow jog toward the noise, before breaking into a run, her ears flat against her head. She wasn't too sure, how ever, she could still smell dogs...and her friend. "River?" she mewed, skidding to a stop when the dogs came into a closer view. Seeing their foaming mouths, sharp teeth, and deranged expressions on their faces. She froze up by then, eyes growing wider. "N-nice doggies...nice doggies..." she mewed softly, her tail beginning to quiver slightly in tension. Oh no... she thought.

River spotted Feather at the other side of the meadow. Just then she realized what she had gotten her friend into; she could die. They could both die! With another yowl, though stronger and fiercer this time, she jumped down onto one of the dogs' backs. It jumped up in shock and turned it's massive head, then attempted to snap at her, turning in circles. She saw her chance and raked her claws down it's back, only to be torn away by one leg by another dog. She felt slightly numb with pain but turned and scratched the dog's face. it dropped her, and her first instinct was to run, run back to the barn. Of course, with her stiff, bloody leg with pain stabbing up in it she didn't do well with running.

Feather bared her teeth, her fur standing on end. "Run River!" she hissed, darting over to her friend, claws scrapping against the soil slightly. One of the medium sized dogs had snapped its jaws at her back, Feather recoiling and letting out another hiss, clawing at the dog's nose. It had let out a tiny yelp, leaping back in surprise. Her fur was standing on end by now, making her look about twice the size she really was. Goes to show how brave she was trying to be at the moment, and most likely how terrified she was. "Just run River," she hissed. "Run!"

River ran, or did her best. She kept up a good pace for her injury, and was feeling faint after the trail of blood being left behind. She bared her teeth and pushed on, running harder than ever. Sure, she'd met up with some of the dogs at the old shack, but never these. Each time she went there, new dogs appeared and the old went who-knows-where. Her ears perked at the musty old smell of the barn became stronger, but she didn't bother to lift her head. Every step, every pain splintering step brought the smell closer and clearer. She wheezed and panted and groaned but refused to slow her pace; after all, the dogs' hot breath continued to blow on her legs hard.

Feather ran beside her friend, slowing so that she would not leave River behind. Her head was low to the ground, her tail curled to the side to try to keep it away from the dog's jaws. Let us get home...please... she thought, continuing on. "Keep running River, we can't stop now." she mumbled, panting slightly as she ran, her chest heaving with effort. I hate running...I hope I never have to run like this again, she thought, unaware of the fact that she might actually be doing more running in the future...much more running. The only thing at the moment that gave the silverish she-cat comfort was the smell of the barn, wanting to just curl up in the hay and go to sleep.

Yes! thought River as she neared the barn, stretching out further and further. The grass and soil turned to hard-packed dirt and rising dust, and she bounded into the barn, frantically scrambling up the ladder for her life. She felt a hot wind flying against a leg as a dog attempting to drag her down. She got to the top of the hayloft and immediatly collapsed, ears flattening against the harsh noise of the barking. All three stuggled with the ladder at once, being unsuccessful. She lifted her head dizzily to look for Feather to see if she was okay, eyes sorrowful and apologetic.

Feather followed, her sore paws pounding against the hard surface of the barn floor before she lunged for the stacked barrels of hay, which about two of them are stacked on top of each other. She scrabbled on top, trying to stay balanced, her eyes growing a bit wide. Don't let me fall...don't let me fall, she thought nervously, watching the barrels sway a bit after she had scrabbled on top of the barrels. She crouched low to the wood on the barrel, the muscles on her back legs tensing before she took a large leap for the hayloft, her claws scrapping against the wood as she struggled to get completely onto the loft. Her hind legs dangled there, kicking and trying to find a way onto the loft. It took a minute or so before she had pulled herself completely onto the loft, letting out a small exhausted pant. But, from her jump it had made the top barrel topple over, the hay spilling out with a loud bang. Feather's eyes widened slightly as she peered over the edge, looking at the dogs, who looked a bit confused by then, and then at the hay barrel. I did that? she thought, tail twitching.

"I'm sorry," River breathed, voice hoarse and out of breath. She turned to lick her wounds and check Feather. She had a few herbs here and there hidden in the barn and around it, but she couldn't get down there. The dogs will leave sometime... their twolegs will come for them, she thought, but didn't get too hopeful and braced herself for the worst. For once she hoped her- or rather, Feather's twolegs would come and tend them, which was a rare thought. She weakly stood up, keeping her one leg high over the ground, and limped over to a corner where she curled up again, only to stand and pace a bit. She was exausted but couldn't keep still. "I'm hungry," she blurted suddenly, gazing wistfully down at the barn floor where she saw a mouse skittering away from the dogs.

Feather nodded, backing away to the wall, her fur still standing on end. "It's all right, it's not your fault the dogs tried to get us..." she meowed, watching her friend for a moment. "Well, we are going to have to wait for the twolegs to come..." she mewed. As if on cue, a familiar twoleg ran in, arms waving and letting out angry grunting noises. Another twoleg, unfamiliar to Feather ran in too, waving his arms too, but letting out a screeching like noise. A couple of the dogs turned to look at them, stopping their barking. The other few dogs let out another string of barks, before the unfamiliar twoleg smacked the dogs on the snout. It let out another loud grunt, a string of grunts and hisses following soon after. The familiar twoleg just grabbed two of the dogs by the scruff, trying to keep them in place.

River's ears perked up, though stayed in her slumped awkward position. She let out a curious mew and stood, peering down to see what was going on. She fluffed out her tail happily as she say that the twolegs were taking the dogs, but crouched down hoping she would go by unseen. She knew she needed help, but was a bit too proud to show it. Unfortunately, one of the twolegs looked up and gestured, but kept hold of the two dogs firmly.

Feather padded forward and peered over the edge, watching for a moment. "See, twolegs are reliable!" she mewed softly, tail twitching back and forth as she watched them. The first twoleg kept grunting something to the other one, who nodded. The second twoleg just escorted a couple of the dogs out of the barn, trying to keep them under control as they struggled to stay inside. The other twoleg looked back at the two cats, eyes narrowed before leading the dogs away. ooc// ;; Writer's block for this post.

River shuddered, seeing the way the other twoleg glared at them. She looked nervously over to Feather. "I-I don't know, I don't trust them. I should go get those herbs now that the dogs are all gone," she mewed, struggling down a few stacks and barrels of hay. She stumbled to the ground, limping carefully toward a hidden corner and reached into a pile of stray straw and hay and other things. She pulled out some leaves and piles of cobwebs, putting them in her mouth as she carefully went up the bales of hay again. "They're not the best solutions, but they'll do. You have any bad injuries?" she meowed weakly, licking some cuts and putting some chewed leaves on them, then cobwebs. she flinched as it was applied, stinging slightly, but then sighed when it began to soothe her. She blinked and struggled over to Feather, looking slowly over her for scratches.

"Not that I know of, only small scratches," Feather meowed. "But you should rest by now River, you nearly had me scared to death." She gave her friend's shoulder a nudge, her plumy tail twitching back and forth. "Just rest, and I'll find us something to eat, all right?" she meowed, even more thoughts buzzing through her head by then. Who was that new twoleg and why were they after the dogs, but it's good they got the dogs out...but still, what was my twoleg doing with that other one...? she thought in confusion.

River sighed, lying down. She couldn't sleep though, and her eyes flickered around the barn. She felt a bit worried, as if the dogs were still around or something would happen. I'm lucky to be alive, she thought to herself. Or, back at the barn at least. I'd probably still be in the tree if it weren't for Feather. "Thank you," she mewed weakly, blinking her eyees slowly. "I'd probably be dead by now if you hadn't come back."
